2008 Jan, 14 [AT] Islamabad: The political situation in Pakistan has never been worse. Pakistan has always struggled in constructing a democratic government. Whenever there is a general election, one or two of the parties come in power. These parties revolve around one of two very strong leaders. The party leadership runs in the family. Muslim League (ML) & Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s party (PPP) are the two pre dominant parties in the country since the last 3, 4 decades. So much so that after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, party leadership is handed over to her 19 years old son, who is still a student at Oxford. Bilawal has lived outside Pakistan all his life and is no way familiar with the current affairs in Pakistan. Despite being the most popular party in the country having the biggest fan following and some very experienced campaigners in its leadership ranks; passing on the driving seat to a 19 year old is taken as nothing but an emotional decision to silence the crowds. So much for the chair, Bilawal Zardari has been renamed as Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. This will silence his critics as Bhutto was the founder of the party and the most popular leader in Pakistan after the father of the Nation, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Whether you are a supporter of PPP or not the death of the Iron Lady of Pakistan came as a shock for all. Inside or outside Pakistan, It was the worst time for this to happen. President Musharraf is already under pressure from islamist extremist organizations. The assassination of Bhutto has resulted in a low level civil war in the country. There was a 3 days mourning announced by the government. Some People took advantage of that & there was situation of complete chaos in the country. People coming on streets and breaking shops, damaging public property, People like me were forced to stay indoors, I was traveling and I couldn’t come back home due to the shortage of Petrol & gas in the country. Over more than 5 thousand vehicles were burnt, several banks looted & public and private property rampaged.
I myself am not a big Bhutto fan as Bhutto family is associated with a lot of money laundering and corruption charges, but whatever the case maybe death of such a power horse is a loss of the entire nation. It results in the imbalance of power, which is no way good for a falling democratic state like Pakistan.
Right now we have a care taker government which is nominated by the president of Pakistan. This government will take care of the country and carry out the elections. Once the Prime Minister is selected which is the head of the government the care taker government ceases to exist. For now the elections are delayed by about 2 month’s time. These incidents have affected the economy big time. The only different between India and Pakistan is of their economy which is booming in India for the reasons that India has a very stable democracy; No military ruler in the history of India has taken over the government, as for Pakistan it is the third military dictator in charge of the state. In India the power has been transferred to the literate middle class. Most of the middle class make it to the senate or the National assembly. In Pakistan the power is more on the provincial level and Feudals and Landlords are the leader of the masses. I hope things change as the time goes by.
All for the Pakistani population, everybody is hoping for the sane leadership which would guide us to a healthy lifestyle, economic growth and last but not the least a secure sovereign state where everybody can practice and lead the life they want. Imparting knowledge to the masses is the only way we can get on the road to success.
LONG LIVE PAKISTAN !
